Dividing a space is easy. Doing so without removing light, without breaking visual continuity, without sacrificing the identity of the environment\u2014that is the real design challenge. <\/p>\n\n
We work daily with architects and designers on high-end residential projects. What we see repeated, almost systematically, is a fundamental error: the partition is considered last, as a solution to a functional problem, rather than being integrated from the earliest design phase as a compositional element. <\/p>\n\n
There is still, among many clients and sometimes even among designers, the notion that an interior partition is something “minor.” An evolved partition wall. An accessory to the building envelope. <\/p>\n\n
In our experience, the most successful projects are those in which the partition is treated with the same rigor as a fa\u00e7ade. The same care in profile selection. The same attention to junction details. The same awareness of the visual weight that element will have on the finished space. <\/p>\n\n
A well-designed interior partition is not “seen” as a divider. It is perceived as structure. As order. <\/p>\n\n
It is not only the quality of the material, though that matters. It is the coherence of the system. Profiles with exposed sections reduced to the essential, glazing that runs from floor to ceiling, integrated hardware that disappears into the composition. <\/p>\n\n
The systems we propose are designed with minimal visual bulk: a few millimeters of profile separating two worlds. Enough to define, not enough to truly divide. <\/p>\n\n
In the technical specifications of an interior window system, one speaks of profile thickness, design, acoustic performance. Rarely does one discuss how that partition will manage light throughout the day. <\/p>\n\n
We have verified on several job sites that a glazed partition positioned correctly can bring natural light into otherwise dark areas, significantly reducing reliance on artificial lighting during daylight hours. This is not an aesthetic detail. It is a performance feature. <\/p>\n\n
To achieve this, certain conditions are required:<\/p>\n\n
Light is not “added to the design” simply by including an extra light fixture. It is governed by structural choices. <\/p>\n\n
When a client requests privacy, the first instinct is still to think of an opaque wall. It is an understandable response, but not the only one. <\/p>\n\n
We have proposed on multiple occasions solutions with satin-finished, fluted, or textured glass\u2014among the options available in the Otif systems we use\u2014and even though they may seem unconventional, the end client has always immediately recognized their value.<\/p>\n\n
Satin-finished or textured glass does not block light: it diffuses it. The space remains bright, visually expansive. But direct vision is screened. It is a form of privacy that does not weigh down, does not oppress, does not create the claustrophobic sensation that a solid wall inevitably brings. <\/p>\n\n
More refined textures add an additional layer: they themselves become a decorative element. A texture that changes with the light, that varies throughout the day, that interacts with the other materials in the space. <\/p>\n\n
